The Darth Vader gargoyle at Washington National Cathedral.

Undergrounders intending to participate in the spiritual Pilgrimage May 24-31 in Washington D.C. should think about some of the sites they’d like to see while there. Do you want to tour the White House?  The monuments? (Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, FDR Memorial, the Viet Nam wall, World War II Memorial, etc.)  Would you like to visit Arlington National Cemetery to see the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier?  Would you like to visit a museum–such as the Holocaust Museum, the Newseum, or a Smithsonian Museum? How about the National Zoo, Mt. Vernon, or the National Archives to see the Constitution and Declaration of Independence?

The Pilgrimage will include spiritual reflection time and activities at the impressively beautiful Washington National Cathedral, a “House of Prayer for All People,” which functions as an Episcopal Church.  There will also be service opportunities related to urban poverty–hunger and housing issues.

If you haven’t turned in your pledge for the trip, please do so soon, and give your feedback to Sherwin & RiAnna regarding the activities in D.C. that you’d particularly like to do.  We can’t do it all, but we’ll try to hit the high points for everyone.  Pledge forms are available in the Lewis Commons at the Cathedral, or at the front desk.

The photo, by the way is the Darth Vader gargoyle, which is on the northwest tower of National Cathedral.

Pilgrim’s Pledge due soon!

Posted by brotherthomasj on November 25, 2009

Senior high Undergrounders (grades 9-12) who are interesting in attending the Pilgrimage to Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., May 24-31, 2010, should turn in the Pilgrim’s Pledge as soon as possible.  Turning in the pledge sheet doesn’t mean you’ve committed to going, it means you’ve committed to preparing.  Final commitment will come in March.  If you need a copy, contact Holly at Calvary–336-3486.

Speaking of Pilgrims, hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving!

Now it’s Advent!   Prepare your hearts for the celebration of the birth of Jesus!

Blessing of the Animals is Sunday, October 4 at 4:30

Posted by brotherthomasj on September 28, 2009

hamsterCome to the outdoor courtyard of the Cathedral at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 4th for the annual Blessing of the Animals, led by the Very Rev. Ward Simpson, our new Dean, who is joining us just this week!

October 4 is the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi, who lived from 1182 to 1226, and was legendary for his love of animals and nature.

Many Episcopal churches honor God’s creatures on this day with a Blessing of the Animals service.  Please bring your pet (properly restrained, of course) and give thanks for the blessing he/she brings to your life!

Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,

grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;

to be understood, as to understand;

to be loved, as to love;

for it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

Amen.
