2010 Pilgrimage Visioning Meeting is 7 p.m., June 10

Posted by brotherthomasj on May 27, 2009

Interested parents and youth came together for a circle discussion on May 3 and decided the destination of the 2010 High School Pilgrimage should be Washington, D.C., with a heavy emphasis on visiting and participating in activities at Washington National Cathedral.  Now the planning and visioning begins!  On Wednesday, June 10, all eligible youth (9th-12th graders next year) and their parents/guardians are invited to attend a visioning meeting at the Cathedral library that will discuss: What ratios of spiritual activity, mission work, and sightseeing/fun do we want?  What sights to we want to see?  When do we want to go?  What kind of preparation should we have for the young people who will participate?  Information on lodging, activities, transportation, anticipated costs, etc., will be presented. If you have any questions, contact Julie Gehm of the Youth Advisory Committee: soundslikegame@yahoo.com or 338-0972.

Wondering how you can make a difference from home?

Posted by brotherthomasj on April 15, 2009

Calvary Cathedral will host lunch at the Banquet hall on April 25th.  Please join us for this wonderful opportunity to reach out to your brothersin need right here in Sioux Falls. This is what we still need.

  • Ten needed for serving; 10:45 – 1:30.
  • Two needed for prep: 8:30 – 11:30.

Jesus had a special sense of mission to poor and oppressed people. At the outset of his ministry, sometimes referred to as Jesus’ mission statement, Jesus stood up in the synagogue at Nazareth and read from the prophet Isaiah:

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18-19)

The biographies of Jesus depict him repeatedly reaching out to those at the bottom of the social pyramid–poor people, women, Samaritans, lepers, children, prostitutes and tax collectors. Jesus was also eager to accept people who were well-placed, but he made clear that all, regardless of social position, needed to repent. For this reason, he invited the rich young man to sell all of his possessions and give the proceeds to the poor. (Matthew 19:16-30, Luke 18:18-30, Mark 10:17-31)

Jesus commanded, “Love your neighbor.” When asked to define “neighbor,” Jesus expanded the traditional meaning of the word–defining our neighbor as anyone who is in need, including social outcasts: “But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed.” (Luke 14:13)

In his portrayal of the day of judgment, Jesus pictured people from all nations gathered before him, separated into “sheep” and “goats.” (Matthew 25:31-46) To the “sheep” he says, “Come you blessed of my Father, for I was hungry and you fed me…” In their astonishment they ask, “When did we do that?” And he answers, “When you did it to the lowliest of my brothers (and sisters).” Conversely, to the “goats” he says, “Out of my sight, you who are condemned, for I was hungry and you did not feed me…”

Jesus himself cared for those in need by feeding the hungry. Crowds of four thousand (Mark 8:1-13) and five thousand (Mark 6:30-44) had assembled to listen to Jesus. They soon became hungry. When his disciples suggested that Jesus send the people away to buy food, he responded by saying “I have compassion on these people…” and “you give them something to eat.” He proceeded to perform miracles to feed these large crowds of hungry people.

Happy Easter!!!

Posted by brotherthomasj on April 12, 2009

ann_chapin_crucifixion_face

The cross is laid on every Christian. The first Christ-suffering which every man must experience is the call to abandon the attachments of this world. It is that dying of the old man which is the result of his encounter with Christ. As we embark upon discipleship we surrender ourselves to Christ in union with his death—we give over our lives to death. Thus it begins; the cross is not the terrible end to an otherwise god-fearing and happy life, but it meets us at the beginning of our communion with Christ. When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die. It may be a death like that of the first disciples who had to leave home and work to follow him, or it may be a death like Luther’s, who had to leave the monastery and go out into the world. But it is the same death every time—death in Jesus Christ, the death of the old man at his call. – Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Wednesday Night April 8th Youth Group

Posted by brotherthomasj on April 9, 2009

As you may have heard by now Kristin is no longer with the Cathedral Underground Youth group.  She started a new job a few months ago and finally made it back to Sioux Falls to pick up and pack the rest of her things.  She happened to be in Sioux Falls on Wednesday night and came to youth group to have a proper goodbye with the kids.

Many of us have had the experience of uprooting our lives to go and experience new places for a job or other reasons.  Those of us with this experience know how exciting this can be, but there is another aspect of it that can often make the transition more difficult than anything we’ve ever done.  We move away from our friends, our family, and everything that we’ve come to know.

Kristin started coming to youth group almost a full year ago. She came in with no idea what to expect or what she was walking into.  She found very quickly that she had a knack for it.  After all, in some ways it’s the best job ever! You get to hang out with high school and learn about and love them in ways that you’d never imagined.  In many ways they are the best people to get to know.  They are real, and energetic, and going through one of the most difficult transitions in their lives!  So you can see how the community and friendships develop.  She left only to realize that of all her friends, these wonderful young adults are some of the people she misses the most!
This picture wonderfully communicates how this youth group has helped transform her life and make her a better person.
Thanks for coming back to visit Kristin! We will miss you very much! You are in our thoughts and prayers :)

YAC meeting April 6th 2009

Posted by brotherthomasj on April 7, 2009

meetings
If you’ve kept up with our blog then you probably know that our Youth Advisory Council meets on the first Monday of every month. What you may not have known is that you are welcome to come. Yes you, not the person you imagine that I’m imagining is reading this.. You! If you are reading this you must be interested in the cathedral underground youth group. Whether you want to volunteer, help, or are already helping, or simply want to observe. You are more than welcome to join us and share your thoughts, praise, or concerns with us!

This week Abby and Kelsey joined us from the youth group. We had a fruitful discussion about our pilgrimage coming up in 2010, how we can continue to improve our Cathedral Underground shows, and how we can improve our communication and ministry in general! Last summer the kids had youth group all summer. It was a new new thing to the cathedral and it was something that everyone enjoyed. Who knew that looking for things to do during summers would lead kids to church on Wednesday nights?

We are looking to continue this ministry and are brainstorming on how we can make this better for everyone involved. If you have ideas or time to share with us, please join us. Our next meeting is May 4th!

Youth Group April 1st 2009

Posted by brotherthomasj on April 2, 2009

This week marked a special evening for the Cathedral Underground! We introduced a new youth leader, as well as had a Middle School mixer to try and introduce some of the upcoming 8th graders to our youth program.  Additionally,  Nathalie, who is a member at the Cathedral has been so kind as to grace us with her presence at youth group.  Last month Kristin took a job in Ft. Collins Colorado and is no longer with us.  In order to adhere with safe church practices it’s essential that we include both a female and a male in the leadership of the group.

God bless Nathalie, who on top of an already busy schedule has volunteered herself for our Wednesday night and Sunday morning meetings. This week we had the opportunity to get to know Nathalie and hear a little bit about what brought her here.

Our middle school mixer was fun.  We had our usual 4 square routine, only this week over Papa John’s pizza!  We played the “i’ve never” game, and then told them a bit about who we are and what we’ve been up to.  I think…I pray….that our community can help them through any of the discomfort that such a difficult transition can create.

Thanks for coming guys!
